Horse Wormers should be used as part of a strategic worming programme which includes pasture management. We offer worm egg count testing which can help determine which horse wormer to use for this time of year. Horse wormer treatments for tapeworm, which is present in up to 69% of horses in the UK, are commonly used in Spring and Autumn. Any horse is at risk of infection from worms but the horses most at risk are those under 5 years old or those over 15 years of age with lower immunity. Encysted small redworm should be treated with Equest or Pramox as a single dose or a 5 day course of Panacur Guard. Using horse wormers such as those containing ivermectin, pyrantel or single dose fenbendazole during late autumn and winter can actually increase the risk of a horse with a high ESRW burden developing larval cyathostominosis.
