Solving Flea & Tick Problems

The problem

Millions of pounds are spent every year on insecticidal flea drops which apparently do not work although they are medicines licensed with governments throughout the world.

WHAT INGREDIENTS DO THEY CONTAIN

The most popular products contain either PERMETHRIN (eg) EASIDROP, FIPRONIL (eg) FIPNIL or FRONTLINE or IMA

IMIDACLOPRID (eg) ADVANTAGE in special formulations designed to spread rapidly through the coat. They are not intended to dry rapidly and should be allowed to dry naturally before allowing any contact with furnishings etc. They may leave a silght mark on the coat or skin. PERMETHRIN products are for use only on dogs, FIPRONIL is suitable for dogs and cats but NOT pet rabbits while IMIDACLOPRID may be used on dogs, cats and rabbits.

DO THEY ALWAYS WORK ?

YES- They kill adult fleas on the animal when used as directed. PERMETHRIN is also highly effective against Ticks and unlike the other ingredients repels as well as killing fleas and ticks. FIPRONIL is less effective for Ticks while IMIDACLOPRID is completely ineffective.

IS THIS REALLY TRUE ?

YES - they kill all adult fleas on the animal when used as directed. Permethrin is also highly effective against ticks, Fipronil slightly less so and Imidacloprid with no affect on ticks.

WHY DO ALL MANUFACTURERS RECOMMEND USING A HOUSEHOLD FLEA SPRAY AS WELL ?

By the time fleas are noticed millions of eggs have been shed to hatch out over the

succeeding months. These “new” fleas are attracted by vibration and will jump onto passing pets (or people) to feed on blood.

WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS ?

Most good household sprays such as INDOREX, ACCLAIM or STAY-KILL

contain PERMETHRIN insecticide to kill adult fleas and a “growth regulator” to stop flea eggs hatching for 12 months. SKOOSH is insecticide free and contains silicones but the effect only lasts for 14 days.

WHY IS MY PET IS STILL SCRATCHING AFTER USING FLEA DROPS ?

Pets can develop an allergy to flea dust which may last for months after the fleas have gone. Insecticides are NOT a treatment for allergies. In severe cases steroids may be used to control the itching.

WHY AM I STILL FINDING FLEAS ON THE PET AFTER USIING FLEA DROPS ?

Have you used a household flea spray wherever the pets have been including

pet bedding, around kick boards in fitted kitchens and furniture close to carpets ?

MY FRIEND SAYS SHE DID ALLTHAT AND HER VET SAYS THAT SOME FLEA DROPS DO NOT WORK

All licensed flea drops work- Most complaints are about “Frontline” and this is simply because more of these are sold than any other brand although PERMETHRIN products may produce fewer complaints because it is the only insecticide to repel fleas and ticks as well as kill them.

BUT WHY HAVE THE DROPS AND HOUSEHOLD SPRAY NOT KILLED THEM ALL ?

Unfortunately insecticidal sprays do NOT kill the PUPAE stages of fleas so these will

still hatch out for some weeks to re-infect pets.

SKOOSH IS THE ONLY PRODUCT TO KILL PUPAE AND WORKS BY “COATING” THEM

WITH SILICONE BUT THOROUGH TREATMENT OF THE HOME IS ESSENTIAL

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE WE CAN DO TO GET RID OF FLEAS ?

YES- Regular use of the vacuum cleaner keeps down the level of contamination.

NB Flea Pupae develop faster in warm conditions
