The Royal Veterinary College and Austin Davis Biologics Ltd, providers of EquiSal Tapeworm testing, have been awarded a research grant by Petplan Charitable Trust for a project entitled: "Improved control of the equine tapeworm, Anoplocephala, through new insights into the biology of the oribatid mite intermediate host.”

Weather conditions this autumn are already leading to numerous outbreaks of Mud Fever in horses. This is usually attributed to the bacteria D.Congolensis which is also implicated in “rain scald” and carried and spread by horses and cattle.

As we approach tapeworm time it is important to remember that although traditionally the time to worm for this parasite have been around October and March it does not really matter when you treat as long as you do so roughly 6 months apart. The reason spring and autumn have been the times to use tapeworm horse wormers is to avoid re-infestation by the mite that infests horses with tapeworm. Modern theory is this mite is around and ingested by horses throughout the year so it does not really matter when the horse is wormed. However a great deal of worming programmes, and a lot of horse owners specify to worm horses for tapeworm in autumn and spring.

Zoetis the makers of Pramox and Equest have made some changes to two of their horse wormers.Pramox and Equest are now in tubes to treat horses up to 700kg in weight.

Latest news on horse wormers is that Equest Pramox a tapeworm and redworm treatment for horses made by Zoetis is now licensed for breeding, pregnant and lactating mares.

Do I need to worm my horse?Yes a horse wormer schedule is essential, it is possible to reduce the frequency at which one worms ones horse, but only through excellent pasture strategy; worm tests and their correct interpretation However within your programme you always need to worm for encysted small red worm in autumn through to the back end of winter, and of course for tapeworm if you have not done so for six months, it is also wise to worm a new horse entering the yard, and if you do use a FWEC if the results are over 200 epg.

Under-dosing horse wormers can lead to resistance, this is because if a horse is given a lower than indicated dose not all of the worms are killed, so the worms that survive may and become more tolerant to the drug in the wormer.
