Animalintex Poultice

Animalintex Poultice is a versatile veterinary dressing designed for treating various conditions in animals like horses and dogs. It contains Boric acid and Tragacanth as active ingredients. The poultice can be applied hot, cold, or dry, depending on the issue. Hot application is good for infected wounds, abscesses, and other conditions requiring warmth, whereas cold application is recommended for fresh injuries with heat and swelling. It can also be used as a dry dressing for bleeding and wound protection. The Animalintex Hoof Dressing is also available as a hoof shaped poultice dressing for convenience.

What is Animalintex Used For?

The poultice is commonly used for infected wounds, abscesses and bruising as well as the specific indications listed below.

Hot

For infected or dirty wounds, hoof punctures, abscesses, coronary band abscesses, quittor-in-the-hoof, thrush, corns (infected or sterile), bruised sole, seedy toe, laminitis, sandcrack, the removal of thorns, and 24 hours after an injury to provide warmth for bruises and contusions.

Hot Poultice Common Uses

Abscesses, Corns, Cracked Heels, Infected Wounds,
Laminitis, Mud Fever, Punctured Foot, Seedy Toe, Thorns

Cold

For bruises, contusions, laminitis and the first 24 hours of any inflamed injury with heat and/or swelling, followed by hot application for warmth.

Cold Poultice Common Uses

Bruising, Capped Elbow, Capped Hock, Sore Shins, Sprains, Strains, Splints

As a Dry Dressing

To stop bleeding, protect from further infection, treat wounds and promote faster healing.

How to Make an Animalintex Poultice

  • To use the poultice, first boil water and let it cool to 38°C to avoid burning the horse. Soak the poultice in the water and squeeze out extra water. If there's infected pus, the poultice should be damp, not soaked, to absorb the pus. For a cold poultice, use the same steps but let the boiled water cool before soaking.

How To Apply Animalintex Poultice

How Long Should You Leave Animalintex Poultice On?

  • Change the poultice every 12 hours and check how the horse is doing. If there's no improvement or if the horse seems distressed, contact your vet.

Contraindications

Do not use with medical preparations except on the advice of a veterinary surgeon.
Should not be used on horses known to be sensitive to Tragacanth.

Special warnings for each target species

The overuse of hot, wet dressings on an open wound or abscess may encourage the development of excessive granulation tissue (proud flesh).

Dogs often attempt to remove and/or consume all dressings, so an appropriate lampshade Buster Collar guard should be used.

Special precautions for use

  • Ensure the dressing is not applied too hot, e.g. by testing on the back of the hand.
  • Ensure that the bandage is not applied so tightly as to constrict circulation.
  • If a skin reaction occurs when adhesive dressings are used to hold the product in place, their use should be discontinued. Skin reaction is characterised by soreness and serum exudate at the site.
  • Consult a veterinary surgeon before applying to infected wounds.
  • For external use only.

Special precautions for the person administering this veterinary medicinal product to animals

Wash the hands after applying a poultice.

Adverse reactions (frequency and seriousness)

In horses, minor reactions in horses to the Tragacanth ingredient have been reported at a very low frequency. These reported minor reactions do not exceed 2 per million units. In dogs, no adverse reactions have been reported.

Use during pregnancy or lactation

Can be used during pregnancy and lactation provided the precautions described in the leaflet are observed, i.e.:

  • Change at least once every twelve hours
  • Do not apply too hot - it should feel comfortable on the back of your hand
  • Endure the poultice is applied with the plastic waterproof backing facing away from the skin or hoof
  • Do not bandage too tightly
  • If the skin is broken, anti-tetanus cover is required
  • If adhesive dressings are used, they should be discontinued if a skin reaction occurs. This is characterised by soreness, redness and serum exudates at the site
  • If in doubt, consult a veterinary surgeon

Ingredients

  • Boric acid   Ph. Eur       2.08 g
  • Tragacanth Ph.Eur        6.02 g

Pharmacodynamic Characteristics

Gum Tragacanth While Gum Tragacanth doesn't have inherent pharmacological properties, it acts as a "drawing" agent when combined with warm or hot water and boric acid. Due to its sparing solubility in water and gummy texture, it helps retain boric acid within the cotton fibres of the pad. When applied to wet, softened skin, it aids in pulling pus from boils and abscesses, and facilitates the removal of foreign objects like thorns from wounds. Some individuals may experience hypersensitivity to Tragacanth.

Boric Acid Ph. Eur. Boric Acid is a mild acid with a pH range of 3.8 to 4.8 when a 3.33% solution is prepared in water. It possesses minor antifungal and antibacterial qualities. A 1.9% water solution of it is isotonic. It is water-soluble, with a solubility of 5% at 22°C and 27.7% at 100°C. Given that a pad can absorb water up to 8.3 times its weight, the typical concentration of boric acid in the solution becomes 0.56%, which doesn't impact osmotic balance.

How long do you leave animalintex on for? Yes. Pro-Kolin is suitable for cats and dogs.
