The 5 Star Horse lick from Rockies contains trace elements and herbs needed by horses and ponies. The licks are durable and have enhanced palatability from apple flavouring and the herb, fenugreek.
5 Star can be fed all year round, at grass or in the stable and will help keep the horse in good condition. The 5 kg size and the ease of ‘hanging’ from a gate post or beam makes feeding particularly easy for individuals or small groups. The box is also very conveniently carried with no ‘mess’ on the hands or in the vehicle!
The lick’s essential trace elements help in some of the following ways.
The zinc is ‘protected’ and will help keep coat and hooves in excellent condition.
High levels of copper are important for horses, particularly in areas of the country where molybdenum and other minerals combine to limit the availability of copper in the diet.
With appropriate amounts of manganese, selenium, cobalt, iron and iodine fertility is also catered for in the formulation.
Selenium deficiency is, particularly, a potential problem in horses in this country. Selenium shortages can be linked to unthriftiness and even muscle tie-up symptoms.
As well as trace elements the formulation contains organic seaweed, with rosehip included as an aid to respiration.
Cod liver oil in the formulation will help retain good coat condition, and general health.
Rockies 5 Star is a mineralised salt block – based on human grade Cheshire crystal salt. Horses can regulate their intake of salt so that at times of higher demand they will take more. This can be where horses are sweating from work, or perhaps a nervous individual, or even where intake of compound feed (containing salt, minerals and vitamins) is restricted. Modern, well fertilised grass swards tend to produce a forage feed that is short in minerals and trace elements. The sodium content of some grass fields may be so low that they do not contain the minimum requirements.
The formulation also contains magnesium, a mineral that is associated with excitability in horses and other stock. So, if you have a nervous horse, it’s a very cost effective way to add extra magnesium to the diet – it might just help!
Mountain riding centre horses from the Builth Wells area were very much involved in the palatability and weathering tests that preceded the product introduction. It’s an ideal spring climate for cold and wet conditions.
