Oxbow GTN-50C 200 tablets |
|
Vitamin C or ascorbic acid deficiency is the most common and most preventable disease in guinea pigs. Adults must be supplemented with at least 10 mg of Vitamin C for every kilogram of body weight. Pregnant, nursing and growing guinea pigs need at least 30 mg of Vitamin C for every kilogram of body weight.
Insufficient Vitamin C intake leads to a condition known as scurvy. Clinical signs of Vitamin C or ascorbic acid deficiency may include rough coat, anorexia, diarrhea, bleeding from the gums, lameness and pain. Delayed wound healing and increased susceptibility to bacterial infections may also occur.
Palatability
The usual supplementation method of adding Vitamin C to water often changes its taste, and thus intake may be adversely affected. GTN-50C is apple flavored and readily accepted by most guinea pigs.
Guaranteed Intake
When two or more guinea pigs live together, it is not possible to accurately measure individual intake of Vitamin C. When giving a tablet, the exact amount each animal consumes daily is guaranteed.
Stability
The bioavailability of GTN-50C is substantially higher than that of dissolved sources. Water soluble powders have a low stability in water; only 20% of the vitamin C sources remain after 8 hours in water.
Reward
Guinea pigs like the taste of GTN-50C and consider it a treat. Owners interact more with their pets and find that guinea pigs will even 'whistle' for their GTN-50C tablet!
Feeding Directions:
For guinea pigs, feed one tablet daily.
In times of stress, Vitamin C requirements may increase.
