Feliway® is a product which reproduces certain pacifying properties of cat facial pheromones.
The placing of facial pheromones is a behaviour which is well known to all cat owners. When a cat feels safe in its environment, it rubs its head from the side of the chin to the base of the ear, against the furniture, the corners of walls or the bottom of curtains. By doing this, the animal is depositing facial pheromones. These marks convey a message of well-being and a feeling of security.
When there is a change in the cat's environment (such as visits to the vets, return from hospitalisation, moving house, new arrivals, rearrangement of furniture) or if the cat is scared, a state of disquiet or stress may develop. This state can be expressed by changes in behaviour, such as urine marking, vertical scratching, loss of appetite or refusal to play and to interact.
In these situations, Feliway® Spray or Feliway® Diffuser can be used to restore the natural balance. Feliway® is a safe solution of feline facial pheromone, which mimics the cat's natural pheromones, creating a state of well-being and calm.
Pheromones are natural substances extremely widespread in the animal kingdom. They are used to communicate between members of the same species.
The development by CEVA SANTE ANIMALE and PHEROSYNTHESE of commercial formulations of nature identical pheromones for use in cats (Feliway®) and in dogs (Dog Appeasing Pheromone - D.A.P.®) created a new field in veterinary science. Pheromonatherapy is an innovative and natural solution to manage stress related problems in cats and dogs.
How to use Feliway Spray?
Before applying Feliway®, clean areas marked with urine using only a mixture of water and surgical spirits or a warm dilute solution of your usual clothes washing powder and allow areas to dry. Do not use strong smelling disinfectants, bleach, detergents or deodorisers to clean affected areas as they may interfere with the action of Feliway®.
If you need to apply Feliway® on electrical equipment, switch off the appliance allow it to cool down and ensure it is completely dry before switching it on again.
Allow bottle to come to room temperature, shake and apply Feliway® at a height of about 20cm from the floor. One dose equals one depression of the nozzle.
To stop urine marking
Apply Feliway® daily, for 30 days on all areas where the cat has previously marked (after they have been cleaned) and to other prominent objects in the home.
In multicat households it is recommended to use the Feliway® Diffuser.
To prevent urine marking
In situations such as moving into an unknown environment, apply Feliway® daily, on prominent objects and room corners.
Vertical scratching
Apply Feliway® once daily on the whole scratched surface (approximately 4 to 6 sprays) for 21 days. At the same time provide a suitable alternative scratching surface nearby. Beware that many cats prefer surfaces which have, or develop with use, vertical grooves in to which their claws fit or track. Scratching posts with horizontal grooves, e.g. posts with coiled ropes, are sometimes refused.
Transportation
15 to 30 minutes before each trip, apply 2 sprays to the floor and ceiling and a single spray of Feliway® to all four corners of a clean travel cage or basket.
It is advisable to allow your cat to familiarise itself with its travel basket long in advance of any trip. Allowing it to play, hide and feeding it tit bits in its basket will help remove any bad associations it may get with the basket.
General Advice
- Consult your veterinary surgeon to ensure that your cat's problem is not of a clinical origin.
- Feliway® should not stain furnishings but it is recommended to test on a sample before use.
- Do not spray when your cat is in the room. Wait 15 minutes before letting them re-enter as the initial smell of the alcohol in Feliway® may upset them.
- The application should be increased to twice a day when several cats are present in the home.
- The product should be used for at least 30 days. Do not stop when you notice improvement.
- For multi-cat households and older cats use for at least 45 days.
- In multi-cat households you could in addition use Feliway® Diffuser to reduce stress level.
- Do not punish your cat for urine marking or scratching as this will only increase their level of anxiety.
- Feliway® does not cover or mask bad smells.
