Spring is tapeworm time for horses! Notwithstanding the drug group of the wormer you are using we have a wormer for you.
Pramox cannot be recommended highly enough; manufactured by Fort Dodge the makers of Equest, it contains moxidectin which is highly effective against redworm for three months, and most importantly the encysted cythastome stage. It also contains praziquantel; effective against all three species of tapeworm for six months. If you have been using Equest for a number of years then do not worry, studies have shown no known reistance to the ingredient moxidectin.
If your looking for a
‘dual’ wormer from a different drug group then Equimax tablets and Equimax paste are ideal. Containing ivermectin with an effective action of two months against redworm; and praziquantel which will treat the three species of tapeworm for six months.
For a tapeworm only treatment, try Equitape contains praziquantel and will treat all three species of tapeworm for three months, but will only worm your horse for tapeworm.
Double dose wormers; these contain pyrantel embonate which is only effective against adult large and small redworm, ascarids and pinworm. It has an action of four to six weeks against these worms. It will treat only one species of tapeworm at a double dose, which would be two tubes for a horse weighing 600kg. Common double dose wormers are Exodus made by Janssen, Pyratape made by Intervet and Strongid P available as Strongid granules and Strongid Paste manufactured by Pfizer.
