Dosage and administration
For intra-articular use
The contents of a 1 ml ampoule (250 mg/ml) are injected into the affected joint once a week for five weeks.
The joint area must be shaved, cleansed and sterilised, as for a surgical procedure, to prevent joint infection. In the presence of active joint inflammation, prior therapy with a suitable anti-inflammatory agent should be used.
For intra-muscular use
The contents of a 5 ml ampoule (100 mg/ml) are injected by deep intra-muscular injection every four days for a total of seven injections.

Contraindications, warnings, etc
Do not inject into infected or actively inflamed joints (see above). After intra-articular injections, reactions in the joint may occur after the first and occasionally after further injections. Should an acute inflammation occur, postpone further injections. If signs or symptoms of hypersensitivity occur, the treatment must be discontinued.
Do not use in pregnant animals.
For intramuscular use, treatment should not be given in cases of advanced renal or hepatic diseases.
In the presence of active joint inflammation, therapy with a suitable anti-inflammatory agent should be given prior to intra-articular treatment with Adequan.
Possible side-effects of treatment following intra-articular administration include increased oedema at the site of the joint.
The product may potentiate the action of other anticoagulant preparations.
Do not mix with other drugs due to possible incompatibilities.

Further information
In traumatic and degenerative joint disease the natural balance between synthesis and degradation of cartilage shifts towards increasing degradation resulting in loss of mucopolysaccharides.
Adequan is chemically similar to the mucopolysaccharides of cartilage and is concentrated in cartilaginous tissue.
Adequan has been shown to be an inhibitor of cartilage degrading enzymes and to stimulate the metabolism of chondrocytes and synovial cells.
Adequan inhibits the development and progression of degenerative joint diseases.
Adequan affects the morphology, biochemistry and mechanical properties of healing tendon. Extension of lesions by enzymic degradation of collagen and proteoglycans is inhibited and enhanced matrix synthesis is stimulated.
Horses with tendon injury should be returned to work gradually with a graded exercise programme.
